Words of praise in Al-Mutanabbi’s sayfyyat poems (A study in the light of semantic field theory)

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the words of praise of Al-Mutanabbi, focusing his attention on the words contained in the poet's poems that were praised by Saif al-Dawla al-Hamdani, the Arab prince with whom a close relationship developed with the poet, which greatly contributed to the fame of each of them. With his superior linguistic ability and outstanding poetic talent, Al-Mutanabbi was able to formulate the finest praises, which are a record full of historical references that illustrated the glories of the Hamdani state and the exploits of its emir. The research sought to mobilize words with a heavy semantic load that were concerned with communicating the purposes of praise and forming its various dimensions. Each of them expressed an aspect of praise, so the first circle consisted of words that pertained to the meanings of courage and strength, and in the second were the words of kingship and dominion, and the third circle consisted of words specific to the meaning of generosity and giving that have a wide space in the Arabic poetry of Al-Mutanabi and others, and it met in the fourth The expressions of moral qualities that highlight the moral system of the praised one, and review his capabilities and human advantages. The fifth circle was formed from the expressions of moral and aesthetic qualities, which is full of suggestions that go beyond the meanings of beauty and handsomeness, and the words of each circle have been distributed in fields Semantics appeared for the research to be included in it, and then the words with a high recurrence rate were analyzed linguistically in light of the context in which they were mentioned, with a pause on some of their stylistic and pragmatic features that revealed some of their characteristics, methods of use, and the large or subtle differences between them in an effort to understand the process Praise when the poet, and capture the features of poetic language him.
