Abstract

This study analyses the relationship between water scarcity and internal migration in Iraq, under the impact of climate change phenomena such as rising temperatures, declining rainfall, and increasing drought. These factors have led to the displacement of thousands of people and the deterioration of food security, particularly in southern provinces.

The research highlights internal migration patterns toward urban areas within affected governorates, driven by economic pressures linked to water shortages. It also emphasizes regional disparities and the vulnerability of certain communities.

The study recommends establishing legal frameworks for environmental migration and implementing adaptation strategies, including improved water-efficient agriculture and livelihood diversification. It advocates for integrating gender perspectives and examining regional impacts of water scarcity. Additionally, it calls for effective urban policies to manage population inflows and underscores the need for regional and international cooperation to achieve sustainable development.
