Mental health is a fundamental human right for all individuals and represents their overall well-being. It is considered a public good due to its connection to sustainable development across all countries, especially after being adopted as one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The significance of mental health in the context of wars and conflicts lies in its association with the increase in mental disorders, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, all of which directly impact the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Mental health is an integral part of public health, and its maintenance in times of war helps the community recover and rehabilitate quickly, enhances productivity, ensures social stability, and facilitates social reintegration, particularly for vulnerable and marginalized groups. This fosters social cohesion and promotes a culture of justice and equality for all, ultimately improving mental health, which positively impacts the overall health of the community.
This research aimed to study and analyze the importance of mental health as a goal of sustainable development, and its connection to economic, social, and health aspects, which directly affect any developmental plan for any country, especially in the context of wars and conflicts. The research also aimed to address the destructive war in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, and its impact on mental health.
The research concluded that mental health and well-being are fundamental human rights for all, and have positive effects on an individual’s personality, enhancing their sense of psychological satisfaction, which in turn affects their productivity at work. The research also found that wars have negative and devastating results on mental health, increasing the prevalence of mental illnesses and disorders, which will have long-term effects on recovery and rehabilitation. This increases the economic burdens on the community and limits the implementation of necessary developmental plans.
