The research aims at :
1. Identifying the most important values which enhance the citizenship concept,
2. Identifying the role of studying history in developing the values that enhance the citizenship values in the students of the History department according to their viewpoints,
3. Clarifying the differences that appear in the subjects' responses on the role of studying history in developing the values which support the citizenship concept according to gender variable.
The subjects of the study consist of the students of the Department of History, College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Kerbala and involve (268) male and female students. The researcher chooses the fourth-year students, morning studies as a purposive sample. These students have formed values and conceptions which can help them to identify the role of history in developing citizenship values . The researcher uses the questionnaire as a study tool. It consists of (75) items distributed on 12 values, and approved for validity and reliability and processed statistically by using SPSS program.The results show that there is a role of studying history in reinforcing the values that enhance the citizenship values. The results also show that there is no significant difference among the subjects' responses according to gender variable. The researcher gives some recommendations, such as:
1. reconsider the educational objectives of teaching history at university attempting to develop them so that they can develop and enhance good citizenship values in students, and
2. any specialist in teaching history should not neglect the emotional side in history which pushes individuals of society to sacrifice themselves for the country.
