The Geographical Distribution of Retired Population in Duhok Governorate for the Year 2024

Abstract

Duhok Governorate is one of the main provinces in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, characterized by its demographic and social diversity. Retirees represent a significant segment of the community, and their number has been gradually increasing due to improved healthcare services and higher life expectancy.

Retirement is an important stage in life, marking the transition into old age, typically starting at 63 years of age. However, this age has recently been reduced to 60, which has led to this group facing multiple challenges on economic and social fronts.

From an economic perspective, the vast majority of retirees suffer from low pension levels compared to the increasing cost of living, which affects their ability to meet their basic needs. From a health perspective, many retirees struggle with chronic illnesses and age-related diseases. They also experience feelings of isolation, which impacts their mental health. Additionally, the lack of free or subsidized healthcare services poses a significant challenge, especially as their medical needs grow with age.

This research aims to highlight the necessity of improving the conditions of retirees in Duhok. This requires both governmental and societal intervention, including enhancing the pension system, providing comprehensive healthcare services, and establishing social centers to encourage their engagement in community activities. Such measures can ensure a dignified life for this group, which has made significant contributions during their years of service.
