Abstract

This study aimed to produce and analyze land cover degradation maps in Iraq during the period 2015–2025 using Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A Composite Land Degradation Index (CLDI) was developed based on the integration of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Bare Soil Index (BSI), Soil Salinity Index (SSI), Desertification Severity Index (DSI), and Water Index, with the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Weighted Overlay technique applied to determine the relative weights of the selected indicators and generate land degradation maps. In addition, the Markov model was employed to analyze Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) changes and predict their future spatial patterns. The results revealed a significant decline in vegetation cover accompanied by an expansion of bare and degraded lands during the study period, with considerable spatial variation in degradation levels across Iraq. The integration of RS-derived indicators, GIS spatial analysis, and field survey data significantly improved the accuracy of degradation mapping and spatial classification. Furthermore, the Markov model indicated that Land Use/Land Cover changes affected 73.28% of Iraq's total area, while the Composite Land Degradation Index (IDI–DSI) showed that degraded lands accounted for approximately 45.5% of the country's area. The findings demonstrate that integrating RS and GIS techniques with the composite degradation index and the Markov model provides an effective spatial framework for monitoring land cover degradation, predicting future changes, and supporting environmental planning and the sustainable management of natural resources in Iraq
