Geographical Potentials for the growing of the date palms types in Misan Governorate for the period (2001 – 2006 )

Abstract

            This research deals with the analysis of the reality of the geographical distribution of date palms orchards in Maisan Governorate, and the possibility to maintain the capability of planting good class date cultivars with nutritive and economical value within the invested geographical zone and creating agricultural lands assigned to be date palms orchards . It also demonstrates the relation between natural and human factors influencing the plantation of date palms as well as its distribution within the Governorate , and then reaching to the most significant recommendations and conclusions concerning such distribution . The research problem lies in finding out whether or not the natural and human factors have a role in the geographical distribution of date palms in Misan Governorate and how can we create new classes of date palms with more economical advantage . The research hypothesizes that the natural and human factors are the main motor of date palms distribution and circulation in Misan Governorate.

The region of the study was limited to the administrative borders of Misan Governorate that it was studied as one region by the use of the regional approach in addition to the field study, the research demonstrates the natural factors represented by the Governorate ‘s geographical position, the nature of the surface, weather characteristics, water resources and soil. A result has been summed up stating that all these factors were helpful to the growth of date palms and keep planting thereof. Yet, the human factors represented by Irrigation methods, agricultural operations and agricultural policy were the key and determining impediment in the proliferation and development of date palms in the Governorate. During 2001, the total space of land planted with date palms was 12316 Donums while there was a little increase in 2016 which was 12528 Donums , that is , additional 216 Donums within 6 years distributed equally among the districts and sub-districts of the Governorate but there is only one common factor that all orchards lie on the shores of Tigris river and its tributaries where the date palms are rarely less than 500 m far away and they are usually neglected and unfruitful in such remote areas . The prominent planted classes are represented by Khudrawi , Wastat Aumran , Dairy and Zahdi . The numbers of date palms has increased from (450596-282414 ) date palms for the period (2010-2016 ) respectively .
