Abstract

This research aims to assess the temporal changes in vegetation cover and its susceptibility to climatic conditions in the Al-Jazira region of Al-Qaim district. This is achieved through the analysis of satellite imagery from 1995, 2008, and 2024 using remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. A set of topographic maps was used, including location, elevation, slope, slope direction, and soil profiles, in addition to climatic data related to temperature and rainfall.

The research relies on the analysis of satellite imagery using the Natural Vegetation Index (NDVI) and digital classification techniques to extract patterns of vegetation cover changes. To understand the relationship between climate change and the deterioration or improvement of vegetation cover in the region, the correlation coefficient between sparse vegetation and barren land was found to be a strong positive correlation (r = 9.4) with the climatic elements of temperature and rainfall. This indicates a direct and clear impact of climate change on vegetation distribution.

Based on these findings, recommendations can be made regarding methods for preserving vegetation cover and adapting to future climate changes in the region.
