The Legal Regulation of Dumping Waste at Sea and its Impact on Promoting Sustainable Development Assistant Lecturer

The problem of waste is one of the most serious contemporary environmental challenges facing the international community, given the increasing volume of industrial, nuclear, and marine waste resulting from human activities. With the development of environmental awareness and the emergence of sustainable development concepts, it has become essential to regulate waste disposal through an international legal framework that ensures environmental protection and the preservation of natural resources for current and future generations. In this context, a number of international and regional agreements have emerged, such as the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the 1972 London Convention on Dumping and its 1996 Protocol, which established legal principles for regulating marine dumping and preventing pollution, thus achieving a balance between economic development and environmental protection .
The research concluded that the legal framework for dumping has gradually evolved from simply regulating waste disposal to a system that enshrines the principle of prohibition and prevention, based on a precautionary approach and the principle of protecting marine ecosystems. The research also highlighted the role of these rules in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
