كانت أزمة فنزويلا عام 1895 واحدة من أهم الحلقات في تاريخ العلاقات الأنجلو- أميريكية بشكل عام، وفي التنافس الأنجلو- أمريكي في أمريكا اللاتينية بشكل خاص، إذ تناولت هذه الدراسة النزاع الأنجلو- فنزويلي وأثره في إعادة تشكيل السياسة الخارجية الأميركية 1895-1899، بوصف إحدى المحطات المفصلية في تطور العلاقات الدولية أواخر القرن التاسع عشر، وتأثيره في إعادة تشكيل السياسة الخارجية الأميركية بين عامي 1895–1899. تتمحور الإشكالية حول موقف الرئيس الأمريكي غروفر كليفلاند في تفعيل مبدأ مونرو وتحويله من سياسة دفاعية إلى أداة تدخل فعّال في النظام الإقليمي، ينطلق البحث من خلفية تاريخية توضح جذور النزاع الحدودي بين فنزويلا وبريطانيا حول إقليم إيسيكويبو (Essequibo region)، الذي تعود أصوله إلى التنافس الاستعماري الإسباني والهولندي ثم البريطاني، وتفاقم لاحقاً مع اكتشاف الذهب في المنطقة، مما زاد من حدة الصراع حول ترسيم الحدود. وقد أدى ذلك النزاع إلى توتر دبلوماسي متصاعد، خاصة بعد تمسك بريطانيا بخط شومبورغك (Schombergic)، ورفض فنزويلا له، مما دفع الأخيرة إلى طلب تدخل الولايات المتحدة استناداً إلى مبدأ مونرو، شكلت نقطة تحول في السياسة الخارجية الأميركية، إذ عززت دور الولايات المتحدة كقوة إقليمية صاعدة، وأسست لمرحلة جديدة من التدخل في شؤون أمريكا اللاتينية.
