تعرض السكان الأصليين في الولايات المتحدة الامريكية لعدد من سياسات الاقصاء والإبعاد من اجل الاستحواذ على الأراضي التي كانوا يقطنون عليها من قبل الامريكيين وكانت نهاية تلك السياسات عندما توجها الكونغرس بقانون عام 1830 والذي يتضمن تهجير السكان الاصليين من مناطق شرق نهر المسيسيبي والمجاورة للولايات الامريكية الى مناطق بعيدة في غرب نهر المسيسيبي, ولاشك أن قانون إزالة وتهجير السكان الاصليين لعام 1830 نشأ بسبب سلسلة من الأحداث. ولم يكن مقدرًا لها أن تحدث بعد تأسيس هيمنة العرق الابيض شرق نهر المسيسيبي أثناء وبعد حرب عام 1812 فضلا عن ذلك الجدال المرير بين الحكومة الفيدرالية وولاية جورجيا حول الحقوق في أراضي السكان الأصليين والذي بلغ ذروته في عهد جيمس مونرو, والواقع أن تلك الأحداث كانت بمثابة نقطة تحول في تاريخ الولايات المتحدة. فقد كان هناك اعتقاد متزايد الانتشار بين رجال الدولة البيض بأن العلاقة غير المحسومة بين العرق الابيض والسكان الاصليين قد وصلت إلى حالة من الأزمة, مما الرغبة في إزالة السكان الأصليين, من خلال تعزيز الظروف السياسية التي سمحت بصياغة التشريعات الفيدرالية لمعالجة الموقف, ومن المرجح إن الدافع والحماس الذي لدى الأميركيين للتوسع في أواخر العقد الأول من القرن التاسع عشر وفي عشرينياته، قد دخل في صراع مع سياسة الولايات المتحدة تجاه السكان الأصليين, كما أن التناقضات المتأصلة في شؤون السكان الأصليين في الولايات المتحدة، وخاصة فيما يتعلق بالمسألة غير المحسومة المتعلقة بالسيادة، جعلت الجدل السياسي بشأن السكان الأصليين ممكنًا بشكل متزايد.
