A Pragma-Cognitive Study of Biden and Netanyahu's Claims on their War on Gaza

The present study is devoted to the analysis of Biden and Netanyahu's claims on their war on Gaza from the pragmatic and cognitive points of view. Biden and Netanyahu are seen to employ different claims when they speak of the war on Gaza in their attempt to justify the war and persuade their audience of the reasons that have made them start such a war. The study intends to uncover the pragmatic and cognitive aspects that are utilised by Biden and Netanyahu in expressing their claims regarding the war on Gaza. The study is qualitative in nature and is based on an eclectic model that includes Culpeper's (1996) theory of impoliteness, Grice's (1975) theory of implicature and Lakoff and Johnson's (2003) theory of conceptual metaphor. Two speeches; one by Biden and one by Netanyahu, have been selected as samples of the study. After analysing the selected data, it has been found that the chosen speeches include some some forms of impoliteness strategies such as negative impoliteness, positive impoliteness and bold-on record impoliteness. The speeches, moreover, contain conversational and conventional forms of implicature. Regarding the cognitive aspects, the selected speeches are seen to include structural and orientational forms of metaphor.
