The Social and Political Role of Women in Costa Rica (1848-1953)

Women are the true foundation and infrastructure of societies throughout history, with all its upheavals, conflicts, and repercussions. A study of the reality of women in Central America in general, and in Costa Rica in particular, reveals a deliberate exclusion of women from essential aspects of life. They have been neglected in education, healthcare, and participation, marginalized, and weakened, their role confined to the home without any training, support, or development. However, Costa Rican women have not succumbed to this exclusionary policy. Instead, they have embarked on a struggle for liberation and the gradual attainment of their rights, overcoming obstacles along this difficult path and working to fill the void created by their absence from various aspects of life, the state, and society, which desperately need them.
Thus, this study focuses on examining the role of Costa Rican women in its various stages and its social, educational, health, and administrative significance. It culminates in their legislative and political empowerment through elections, candidacy, and decision-making, representing a valuable experience worthy of further research and study.
