Evaluating the Efficiency of Drinking Water Services in Anah District and Ways of Developing Them

This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of drinking water services in Anah District, Anbar Governorate, western Iraq, and to identify spatial disparities in service levels between the district centre and peripheral areas. It examines water quality, continuity of supply, equity of distribution, and infrastructure efficiency. The study is based on the hypothesis that the efficiency of infrastructure and the spatial distribution of water networks affect both service efficiency and beneficiary satisfaction.
The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach based on a field questionnaire distributed to a stratified random sample of residents of Anah District. A total of (185) valid questionnaires were obtained for analysis. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS, while Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to analyse the spatial distribution of water stations, networks, and service coverage areas.
The findings showed that the overall efficiency of drinking water services in the district was moderate, with a mean score of (3.73), while water quality recorded a high level with a mean score of (4.0). The results also revealed spatial disparities in service levels, as water networks and stations were concentrated in the district centre and nearby areas, whereas peripheral areas experienced relatively weaker coverage and less continuous water supply. Statistical analysis indicated a positive relationship between the efficiency of spatial distribution and service efficiency, while distance from water sources had a negative effect on service levels.
The study recommends expanding water networks in peripheral areas, rehabilitating ageing pipelines, reducing water losses, and establishing or supporting storage and pumping points near remote settlements. It also recommends adopting Geographic Information Systems to identify underserved areas and prioritize service interventions.
